THE BRANDOS veröffentlichen „Los Brandos“ am 16.06.2017
Nach zehnjähriger Durststrecke veröffentlichen LOS BRANDOS neues Material.
Ihren Namen verdanken sie ihrer Vorliebe für Marlon Brando. Ihre Fans kennen sie als eine der vitalsten amerikanischen Live-Rockbands der letzten zwei Dekaden des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Band, die mit zeitlosen Klassikern wie „The Solution“ oder „Gettysburg“ eine Bresche für geradlinige und ehrliche Rockmusik schlug, meldet sich im Mai 2017 nach einer über 10-jährigen Durststrecke mit einem neuen Studioalbum zurück. Frontmann/Gitarrist/Songschreiber Dave Kincaid arbeitet bereits seit vielen Monaten an dem Nachfolger zu Over The Border, das im Dezember 2006 erschienen war – ebenfalls nach einer extrem langen Pause von 8 Jahren. „Eile mit Weile“ – so könnte man den Prozess der Aufnahmen im Homestudio von Kincaid auf Staten Island, einem der fünf Stadtbezirke von New York City, bezeichnen.
Reinhören in „Senor Coyote“
Zu Beginn des Jahres 2015 hatte Kincaid aufhorchen lassen, als er über die Crowdfunding-Plattform Kickstarter für finanzielle Unterstützung für ein neues Brandos-Album warb: „Broadcast quality recordings have never been inexpensive to make, and while computer technology has opened up a world of possibilities not there twenty years ago, it’s still a very expensive process. The Brandos have always kept to the highest standards of professionalism with our recordings, and we will not lower those standards now for the sake of saving money.“ Die Kampagne brachte ihm über $26.000 ein, die er zum Ausbau seines Studios benutzte. Auf seiner Facebook-Seite ließ Kincaid seine Fans und Unterstützer am Fortschritt der Aufnahmen teilhaben: „Since the beginning of the year, my main focus has been on upgrading the recording studio, Townsend Sound, here on lovely, scenic Staten Island, NY, USA. Few things are as time-consuming, maddening and frustrating as dealing with recording software/hardware upgrades, but it’s pretty much done now. We now have a new state-of-the-art computer based recording system, refurbished monitors (speakers), and the control room just tuned by the best acoustical engineer in New York. My instruments are all pretty much tweaked to perfection, and my guitar amp and drum systems are all in place and very, very happening.“
Mit Blue Rose Records als Label wurde als Veröffentlichungstermin der Dezember 2015 angesetzt, doch schon im September war abzusehen, dass der Termin nicht zu halten ist. Ein Jahr später dann ein optimistisches Facebook-Posting, wobei ein Foto mit Kincaid eine Vielzahl an Musikinstrumenten zeigte: „Every instrument pictured here has been played on this new album. No, it’s not about quantity, it’s about the right tools for the job, and we’re trying some new things here. The material is shaping up very nicely, but I don’t mind telling you folks, getting this album done is a tough one. Some of the reasons for this are personal, and I won’t get into that here, but a big part of it is the fact that this is the first Brandos album done entirely on a computer-based system. While these are great in so many ways, the sound they produce is very sterile and clinical. This may be great on techno, pop and new-age music, but it ain’t great for rock ’n roll. So, a lot of time has been spent in experimenting with how to get it to sound like the old tape machines, which are GREAT for rock ’n roll. The best recording engineers in the world will tell you that this is a big challenge, and there’s a whole industry of software developers trying to make programs that emulate the old recording equipment, and they haven’t quite succeeded as of yet. At any rate, with a lot of time, effort and expense dedicated to solving this problem – and it HAD to be figured out, or it wouldn’t be a Brandos album – I think we have it. The work goes on…“

Es vergingen weitere Monate im Studio, als im November 2016 die Anfrage vom Blacksheep-Festival in Bad Rappenau-Bonfeld bei Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg einging, ob die Brandos für einen Auftritt im Juni 2017 zur Verfügung stünden. Vielleicht musste ein solcher Anruf erfolgen, um die Arbeiten zum neuen Album endlich zu einem erfolgreichen Abschluss zu bringen, denn eine Show oder gar eine komplette Tour im Juni 2017 ohne ein neues Album war undenkbar. Und so arbeitet Dave Kincaid derzeit noch härter, aber auch freudiger, an der Fertigstellung des bislang noch unbetitelten siebten Studioalbums seit dem Debüt Honor Among Thieves im Jahr 1987. Vielleicht ein gutes Omen – 30 Jahre nach dem ersten großen Erfolg der mittlerweile „dritte Frühling“ der BRANDOS!
Zur Besetzung der 2017-Brandos-„Ausgabe“ schreibt Dave Kincaid:
„The lineup of the band for the upcoming tour: myself of course, up to my usual antics, Tommy Goss (Thomas Goss) on drums/vocs, Frank Giordano on guitar/vocs, and Sal Maida on bass/vocs. As some of you know, Tommy played all the drums on this new album, and did a tour with us all the way back in ’97, and played on a couple of tracks back then, „Hallowed Ground“ and „Lodi.“ We’re very happy to welcome Frank back into the band, and I believe he’s already well known to most of you, as he did many tours with us as well as playing on the „Pass the Hat“ album and various subsequent tracks. Sal is one of the best bass players in the New York area, with an impressive and long list of people he’s played with: Roxy Music, Sparks, Cracker and a host of others. For my part, this is a killer lineup, and I’m very much looking forward to getting out there and rocking‘ it with these guys.“
